U.S. Attorney for Western Pennsylvania announces resignation

Eric Olshan

PITTSBURGH — A federal attorney who represents Western Pennsylvania is stepping down.

United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania Eric Olshan announced Wednesday that he’s resigning after less than two years in the role. That resignation goes into effect at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.

“The dedicated public servants who walk the halls of our office are second to none in their cleareyed and even-handed commitment to pursuing justice on behalf of the more than three million people who call the Western District of Pennsylvania home,” U.S. Attorney Olshan said. “Serving alongside this team of career civil servants—prosecutors, civil litigators, and professional staff alike—has been the privilege of my career. I am grateful to President Biden, Senator John Fetterman, and former Senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey for their trust and faith in my ability to lead the office.”

Olshan was nominated by President Biden for the role in March, 2023, and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in June of the same year.

During his tenure, the office focused on tackling violent crime, drug trafficking organizations, and driving down the illicit sale and use of firearms. They also focused on scammers preying upon vulnerable people, like an international lottery scam targeting the elderly and a far-reaching bail bond scam.

Under his leadership, officials say the office “cemented its reputation” as a leader in hate crime enforcement. Among the hate crime cases Olshan pursued includes the conclusion of the prosecution of Robert Bowers, the Tree of Life gunman who killed 11 Jewish worshippers in 2018. Bowers was sentenced to death in August of 2023.

Outside the courtroom, Olshan also invested in community outreach through programs like United Against Hate, Take Back the Night march, National Night Out and Pittsburgh Pride.

First Assistant United States Attorney Troy Rivetti, who has served the office for over 27 years, will become the Acting United States Attorney when Olshan resigns.
