Strong storms, flooding leave a mess in Canonsburg

CANONSBURG, Pa. — Business owners along West Pike Street in Canonsburg are cleaning up after flooding caused more damage Sunday, marking the second time in less than two weeks that some have been forced to make repairs.

Although the water had receded by Sunday evening, mud, debris and visible damage remained.

One business owner showed Channel 11 where the water damaged a garage door.

“It’s costly, but it’s also time-consuming,” said Cheryl Homerosky, whose family owns a tanning salon along West Pike Street.

Homerosky said her family had just replaced equipment and made repairs following the previous flooding.

“My son pulled out a lot of the boards and stuff and sent them back and got new equipment and parts for the beds, and we’re back here again with the same issue with the flooding,” Homerosky said.

Along with damaging expensive tanning equipment, Sunday’s floodwaters left mud throughout the business.

Across the street at Community Motors, owner Sharon Mastrangioli faced a similar cleanup.

“Just a lot of mess, a lot of hours of cleanup,” Mastrangioli said. “It’s very frustrating. It’s exhausting, to be honest.”

Mastrangioli said flooding has affected her car repair business for years.

She and other business owners believe nearby Chartiers Creek contributes to the problem.

“The problem is it comes up over the hillside and then washes down that alleyway over there with tons and tons of debris,” she said.

Channel 11 also saw flooding earlier Sunday along Hahn Drive and Maple Lane, near Chartiers Creek.

Debris remained in the area after the water levels dropped.

Mastrangioli hopes Canonsburg officials and leaders in surrounding communities can work together to address the repeated flooding.

“We need people to take responsibility for what is their responsibility to take and fix it for us,” she said.
