Runners hit the pavement in North Park for a Groundhog Day-themed race.
It was held at the North Park Boathouse on Saturday morning. Runners got hats with a groundhog on them.
The Groundhog Day 5K is part of a series of runs held during the winter designed to encourage people to stay active during the cold months.
It includes upcoming Valentine’s and Saint Patrick’s Day-themed runs.
Runners use the events to help prepare themselves for the peak running season and for big races like the Pittsburgh Marathon which will be held in the spring.
“We love to provide an opportunity for folks to just keep moving through the cold weather. Today is a beautiful day even though it’s a bit chilly, get outside, get some fresh air, get it in before you have the rest of your day,’ said Jessika Coltz with GCXC Race Timing.
Organizers also collected donations and non-perishable food items for the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.
The runners can expect to continue practicing their cardio in the cold through. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Sunday and predicted six more weeks of wintry weather.
