Break from bitter cold, snow with highs above freezing on Friday

PITTSBURGH — We’ll enjoy a nice break from the cold and snow today with highs getting above freezing this afternoon. We should even see a little sun to end the day. Enjoy it, because we may not see such tranquil weather for a little while.

Clouds return late tonight with some rain and snow on tap Saturday morning. For most areas, temperatures will be marginal for snow, which means it will have a hard time sticking to the roads. By mid-day, rain/snow will transition to just light rain from Pittsburgh points south, with a drying trend as we head toward the evening.

Don’t blink though because there is a second system to watch for Sunday which has been trending further north since yesterday. That may bring areas south and east of Pittsburgh a round of steady snow followed by widespread snow showers Sunday night. If the trends continue, parts of the area (especially in the mountains) could see several inches of snow.

Temperatures plummet by Monday morning with wind chills as cold as -10, with subzero wind chills for much of Tuesday and into at least early Wednesday.
