Man arrested after woman held captive, beaten for hours

CARROLLTON, Ga. — A man has been arrested after a woman showed up at a hospital with injuries in Carrollton, Georgia.

In a news release, the Carrollton Police Department said on Thursday that investigators with the Criminal Investigative Division were called out about a patient at Wellstar Douglas Hospital who had injuries from an incident that happened in Carrollton.

Officers say the patient, a woman, had a swollen face and bruises, according to WSB-TV. She reportedly told police that she was beaten and strangled over six hours inside an apartment.

The woman told investigators that she was able to get out of the apartment but got forced back inside, the news outlet reported.

Officers searched the apartment and identified the suspect as Nathaniel Bernhardt, 27. According to WSB-TV, investigators found more than five pounds of marijuana and a gun during the search.

Bernhardt has been charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, false imprisonment, kidnapping, possession of marijuana, with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, police say.

It’s not clear if Bernardt and the victim knew each other, according to WSB-TV.
