Man killed while stopped in traffic near Squirrel Hill Tunnel

PITTSBURGH — A man is dead following a multi-vehicle crash on the Parkway East Monday morning.

Troopers say the crash happened just before 2 a.m. in the westbound lanes. At the time, there was a temporary closure of the Squirrel Hill Tunnels inbound.

Landon Ray, 47, was in a Honda Civic, stopped in that traffic, when he was rear-ended by a Corvette driven at a high rate of speed.

“We had reports from witnesses that they noticed that silver Corvette traveling at a high rate of speed,” Trooper Rocco Gagliardi with the PA State Police tells Channel 11.

Troopers say the Corvette was driven by 27-year-old Brandon Lewis. When it slammed into the Civic, it pushed that car into two other vehicles.

“Unfortunately, that Honda Civic almost gets sandwiched from that high rate of speed and when you have a vehicle at that high rate of speed go into a stationary object, it kind of goes into the vehicle,” Trooper Gagliardi said.

He said first responders did everything they could to try to save Ray, who was trapped inside his car.

“First responders on scene had to use all tools available to extract the operator of the Honda Civic,” Trooper Gagliardi said.

Ray was rushed to a local hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.

“It’s terrible, it’s awful,” Pam Rossey said. “Someone lost a loved one.”

“I can only imagine if that happened to me and someone I care about,” Brooks Marzka said. “I’d be angry and upset.”

State police are investigating whether or not drugs or alcohol, time of day, road conditions or distracted driving played a role in the crash.

“We’ve been working really all early morning with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office.”
