PITTSBURGH — A woman is in critical condition after she was hit by a car in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood Friday.

Pittsburgh police said emergency crews were called to the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Neville Street at around 7:20 p.m. for reports of a pedestrian hit by a car.

Responding units found a woman who was unconscious and had injuries to her head.

The initial investigation indicates that a car was going outbound on Fifth Avenue when an opposing vehicle, travelling inbound on Fifth Avenue, tried to make a left onto Neville Street. The outbound car swerved to avoid a collision and inadvertently hit the woman.

The woman was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. She was also taken immediately into surgery, officials said.

The driver stayed on the scene and was fully cooperative with police.

The investigation is ongoing.
