Wintry mix could create problematic icy conditions in parts of Western PA

PITTSBURGH — It’s cold and dry this morning, with temperatures in the 20s across most neighborhoods. Areas along I-80 have dropped into the teens, and cold air will stay trapped throughout the day. A few sleet, snow or even rain showers are possible early this afternoon, but impacts will be low across most places.

More widespread precipitation will slide in during the mid to late afternoon, with temperatures cold enough for at least brief freezing rain around the city. A few hours of freezing rain is expected north of Pittsburgh — along the 422 corridor — while snow and sleet may mix in up along I-80. Those areas will have the higher travel impacts, where up to a tenth of an inch of ice is possible, with around a quarter inch expected into the mountains.

Rain will be steadiest early this evening, with the bulk of it exiting by 9 or 10 p.m. A few snow showers are expected Sunday morning, but there will be little to no accumulation. Quiet but chilly weather continues into Monday, and areas south of Pittsburgh will get some light snow on Tuesday.
