Traffic calming coming to Brighton Heights Road

PITTSBURGH — Traffic calming measures are coming to a busy Brighton Heights road where drivers frequently speed, according to city leaders.

In a press release sent by the Mayor’s Office, city officials wrote that the “crash history” and speed data collected on Termon Avenue are prompting necessary changes.

According to data collected in 2021, more than 95 percent of drivers on Termon Avenue exceeded the posted speed limit of 25 mph. Most of those speeders traveled at 37 mph or faster.

As a result, workers will be adding a speed table, which is similar to a speed hump, as well as several “chicanes,” which cause curves in the road. One traffic circle will be added where Termon intersects with McClure Avenue. The overall project spans from California Avenue to Brighton Road.

The work is set to begin May 1 and last for five days. Construction will take place from 7 am to 5 pm.

“During the construction of the speed table, one lane of traffic on Termon Avenue will be closed with flaggers stationed at each end in order to allow alternating traffic,” the release states. “During the traffic circle construction, there will be intermittent closures of the Termon and McClure intersection. Through traffic should seek an alternative route, however local residents will be allowed passage. Small travel delays are likely and should be anticipated.”

Temporary no parking signs will be posted in certain areas as the work is ongoing.

Residents told Channel 11 on Friday that the project is welcomed, and that several neighbors had been fighting for this type of action to take place.
