Tarentum declares local emergency, shutting down bridge after sinkhole discovery

TARENTUM, Pa. — A storm sewer line collapsed in Tarentum, creating a huge sinkhole in the middle of the roadway. The risk is so great that Tarentum’s borough manager shut it down to traffic, calling it a local emergency.

“That’s crazy,” said Jessie Spears who works near the sinkhole.

That’s the overall reaction in Tarentum tonight, after a huge sinkhole developed along the 4th Avenue Bridge over Bull Creek.

Spears continued, “I drove past this morning and half the road was blocked off but I couldn’t see why it was dark, it was 5:30 when I came through so I didn’t know what was going on.”

Tarentum’s Borough manager declared a local emergency Wednesday because of the huge hole - shutting the bridge down to traffic and placing a metal plate over the hole.

Matt Feeney says he encountered the closure when getting to work this morning. Feeny said, “They just had the road closed and uh it made getting here a little fun. I had to go up and around and come down over there.”

He says he didn’t know the hole was that bad until he saw a picture of it.

“Oh wow. Yeah when I drove through they already had a plate on it. I thought it was a manhole or something because the borough dudes were down here with pickaxes. I didn’t know what for though,” Feeny said.

The Borough hasn’t given a timetable for when the bridge will be reopened. Access to nearby businesses remains open via Center Street.
