TARENTUM, Pa. — Tarentum Borough is cracking down on illegal parking at the intersection of East Street and West 10th Avenue.
The yellow curbs in the area are now designated as “tow zones” through mid-February.
“A lot of these apartment buildings don’t have a place to park and [people] park a lot on the yellow curbs,” neighbor Brad Lightner said.
Tarentum Borough put out a notice to neighbors calling parking there a “safety concern.”
Lightner has lived a couple doors down from the intersection for fifteen years. He says truck traffic is the real problem. Tractor trailers sometimes ignore posted “No Trucks Allowed” signs and are forced to make turns onto narrow roads.
“They’ve taken turns and wiped-out people’s cars. I think they hit a fire hydrant once about two months ago,” Lightner said.
He’s taken videos of semi-trucks backing up East Street after traveling into the “one way” section of the road.
According to the borough, council is working on making the tow zone permanent, adopting a new ordinance as soon as February.
Lightner says he understands but would like to see traffic cameras installed first to help identify trucks traveling where they shouldn’t.
“If we’re not going after the trucks, why are we going after the local people. That’s what I don’t understand. It is a yellow curb, yes. They are breaking the law but stop the trucks and we won’t have the problem.”
