Students sent home after reported gas leak at Robinson Township Catholic school

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Students and staff at Archangel Gabriel Catholic School in Robinson Township were forced to evacuate Wednesday morning after reports of a possible gas leak.

First responders rushed to the school along Steubenville Pike — as students from preschool through 8th grade were evacuated into the church next door.

Parents were immediately notified.

“We got notified there was a gas leak and they were evacuating them to the church,” said Brianna Williams, the mother of a first-grader. “Then we got a message that, out of an abundance of caution, they were releasing students and to come pick them up. So, here we are.”

Fire crews, school buses and concerned family members quickly arrived as investigators worked to find the source.

“Oh, absolutely. With a gas leak, you can’t take chances,” said a grandmother, Marcia Crowley.

“A little chaotic, but what kid doesn’t want a day off school?” Williams said.

People’s Gas crews spent more than an hour testing the lines.

A spokesperson tells Channel 11 there was an odor of gas. They tested all the lines, and they all passed.

They quickly determined the problem was a faulty pilot light on a kitchen appliance.

Parents said they were relieved the evacuation went smoothly and no one reported feeling sick.
