JEFFERSON HILLS, Pa. — Nearly two inches of rain fell on Jefferson Hills and nearby South Park Monday, leading to multiple road closures as water-laden creeks threatened to overtop their banks.
Public works crews were seen throughout the borough immediately after the storm passed, sweeping up rocks that had been pushed into the roadway.
Nearby Peters Creek was an opaque mud color, except for the large tree branches being swiftly carried downstream.
The water was so forceful that it pushed past basement doors, destroying families’ belongings.
“It hurts,” one tenant said. “I lost a lot of my things two years ago, and I just lost everything all over again that I replaced.”
The tenant’s insurance policy didn’t cover flooding from outside the home, and electrical wires running through the basement prevented her from venturing into the murky water to begin the clean-up process or salvage what she could.
Most of the water drained quickly from the impacted areas, and some roads were able to be opened within an hour after the rain stopped.
That is, except for the water in the basement, which drained more slowly and prevented the clean-up from beginning.
“Can’t even get down there to clean it up because there’s electrical wires plugged in,” the tenant said.
