Extremely cold temperatures begin overnight as snow showers continue

PITTSBURGH — Scattered snow showers continue this evening. Winter Weather Alerts are in effect until 9 a.m. Monday morning but snow showers should wrap up overnight. Additional snowfall could be around 1″ or less with slightly higher marks near the ridges up to 2″.

Any snow that falls will reduce visibility and cover roads. Wet roads and surfaces will freeze tonight, watch for icy conditions. Overnight temperatures will fall to the single digits as the bitter cold air settles in for start of the week, wind chills will drop below freezing overnight.

The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington, Westmoreland, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Armstrong, Lawrence, Clarion, Venango, Forest, Monongalia and Preston counties from 1 AM Monday through 1 PM Wednesday where wind chills could get as low as -23°. An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for the ridges of Fayette, Westmoreland, Indiana and for eastern Preston, Tucker and Garett counties from 1 a.m. Monday through 1 p.m. Wednesday where wind chills could get as low as -28°.

Wind chills Monday morning drop to as low as -10° or -15°, high temperatures will be near 10° but wind chills will stay below zero for much of the day. Overnight lows on Tuesday morning are likely to drop below zero, with the coldest start on the way for Wednesday morning. Temperatures Wednesday morning will likely be the coldest morning in almost ten years with temperatures ranging from around -7° to -15° with colder wind chills. This bitter cold air should begin to lift out of the area for the end of the week. Make sure to be prepared for the cold weather. Use caution when traveling, make sure to have extra layers and a blanket with you, limit time outdoors, and keep pets inside. Don’t forget to protect pipes as they could freeze in this extended cold stretch.
