Officials said the fire in Darlington Township started shortly before 2 p.m.
The fire was contained to the yard. No injuries were reported.
Investigators are still looking into the cause.
Heavy smoke continued to hang in the air as neighbors described what they saw.
Darlington Borough Council President Terry McKeel said the calls came fast.
“The phone calls started coming in of ‘Oh my God! What is going on? The junkyard is on fire!’” McKeel said.
At least 11 fire departments worked through the afternoon and into the evening on Monday to get the flames under control.
Erica Stesprit, who lives nearby, said her family felt the impact immediately.
“My teenagers got home from school, and my daughter was at my sister-in-law’s, and we are right here behind the brickyard,” Stesprit said.
Channel 11 captured video from above showing crews using a mechanical claw to move several vehicles, including one that was burning.
Neighbors told Channel 11 they heard several explosions.
“I know I did talk to my mom at one point, and she was crying because she was upset. She said with the explosion, she was worried that they were going to start filtering into the other houses,” one neighbor said.
Township officials said the air quality remained safe.
But one woman who lives close to the yard said her family did not want to take any risks.
“They decided to actually evacuate because the smell was getting bad. They were getting headaches,” she said.
