FREEPORT, Pa. — A local parish received a very special and strikingly bold blessing on Sunday.
Saint Mary Mother of God Parish, located at 608 High St. in Freeport, celebrated its 200th anniversary with a ceremony.
The parish, which has a 175-year-old church building, recently had its steeple repainted and a gold cross imported from Europe installed.
Bishop Larry Kulick from the Diocese of Greensburg gave a blessing while being lifted approximately 130 feet to the steeple.
The congregation gathered for a group picture afterward to commemorate the anniversary.
