Snow showers move in ahead of extreme cold front

PITTSBURGH — Light rain and snow showers are expected through the area this evening ahead of a cold front. As temperatures fall below freezing, icy spots are possible tonight. Snow showers in the ridges and mountains could bring a minor accumulation and impact travel. Overnight lows will drop to the upper teens and low 20s.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Fayette and Monongalia counties along with the ridges of Westmoreland county from 1 a.m. Sunday morning through 9 a.m. Monday morning. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for eastern Monongalia, Preston, Tucker and Garrett counties from early Sunday morning through Monday morning.

Snow is expected to develop Sunday out of the south, with steady snow south and east of Pittsburgh. Snowfall amounts are expected to range from 1″ or less for areas around the city to several inches south and east of Pittsburgh with the highest snowfall amounts in the ridges and mountains. There is still some uncertainty with the track of this next system, make sure to check back for updates.

Behind this will come a blast of cold arctic air for early Monday morning through Thursday morning. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch for the entire viewing area starting at 4 a.m. Monday and will continue through 10 a.m. Thursday. Wind chills by Monday morning drop to as low as 10 or 15 degrees below zero with minimal improvement through the day. Overnight lows on Tuesday and Wednesday morning are likely to dip below zero, with Wednesday morning possibly being our coldest morning in almost ten years. The worst of the arctic cold should lift out by Thursday afternoon.
