PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Regional Transit is about to finish its years-long project of replacing light-rail track supports in the city.
Starting Thursday, contractors will close the rails between Steel Plaza and Gateway Stations to replace the concrete beam supporting the track in the Downtown subway.
PRT said this project has been going on intermittently since 2022.
As the final renovations are completed, the inbound light-rail service from the South Hills will stop at First Avenue Station and Steel Plaza Station and end at Penn Station, the inactive light-rail station on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway. The Wood Street Station will be closed and will not be served during this phase.
PRT has set up the following changes to help riders get around as the project wraps up:
- From Penn Station, riders can take a shuttle bus to Gateway Station, with an additional stop at a temporary bus stop outside Wood Street Station.
- A “Subway Local” light-rail car will run between Gateway, North Side, and Allegheny Stations.
- Riders traveling from Allegheny or North Side Stations can take the “Subway Local” to Gateway Station and then transfer to the shuttle bus to Penn Station, where they can board rail cars heading to the South Hills.
- Both the “Subway Local” between Allegheny and Gateway and the shuttle bus between Penn Station and Gateway will run every 10 minutes.
The work is expected to be done by early March.
