Pothole on busy Pleasant Hills road pops multiple tires, leaving drivers with large repair bills

PLEASANT HILLS, Pa. — A pothole along a busy road in Pleasant Hills has drivers facing thousands of dollars in repairs. At least six drivers had their tires popped along Curry Hollow Road over the weekend.

Keith Leydig’s car was one of the ones damaged. He now needs two new wheels and the sensors in them, an around $1,700 expense.

“Coming down Curry Hollow Road, quarter to 8 hit the pothole, got two flat tires from the pothole,” he said.

When he pulled over - he quickly realized he wasn’t alone.

“They come running over like, ‘do you have a flat tire.’ ‘Yes.’ ‘We do too,” he said.

Several other drivers had also popped a tire on the pothole

“When I pulled off to the side of the road there were three cars already in the Sheetz parking lot waiting for flat tire repair from AAA and then by the time I got towed, two more cars were pulled over with flat tires,” Leydig said.

After the fact, several drivers took to social media to spread the word about the crater near 301 Curry Hollow Road. One of the drivers affected sent Channel 11 pictures of his car. He says the rim and tire were destroyed. It’s unclear how much it will cost to fix his car.

Several of those affected say they contacted Pleasant Hills police, along with the municipality and PennDOT to get the huge hole filled - which as of Monday afternoon had been done.

Jim Garrity with AAA says unfortunately we are in the thick of pothole season.

“When you have wild fluctuations in temperatures you can expect to see potholes in the subsequent weeks as the water gets down into the holes and it freezes and expands and it makes cracks in the road then when it thaws you have crumbled concrete that cars drive over pull up and throw all over,” Garrity said.

Leydig says he contacted his insurance company to file a claim and is hopeful it will cover the cost.

PennDOT confirmed it maintains Curry Hollow Road and says drivers who experienced damage due to the pothole have the right to file a claim with the Commonwealth’s Bureau of Finance and Risk Management.
