OHIO TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A person was shot by an officer and later died after a police chase along I-279 ended with a crash.
Pennsylvania State Police say three other people are recovering in the hospital after the crash and officer-involved shooting in Ohio Township on Saturday.
Southbound I-279 closed between I-79 and the Camp Horne Road (Exit 8) interchange while police collected evidence and reconstructed the crash. The road shut down before 9 p.m. Saturday and reopened around 4 a.m. Sunday.
The incident began when police began pursuing a white SUV in Butler County shortly before 8 p.m., state police say. Multiple departments chased the SUV into Allegheny County.
It’s unknown why police were chasing the vehicle.
The chase ended around mile marker nine on southbound I-279 when the SUV lost control and crashed, flipping at least two times, state police say.
State police say at this point, there were shots fired, which led to an officer-involved shooting.
It’s unknown which department the officer who fired belongs to.
All four people who were in the SUV were taken to hospitals, state police say. The person who was shot later died, but the three others are recovering.
The people involved have not been identified.
No officers were hurt during the incident.
State police say the investigation involves many moving parts, and right now, the major case team is reviewing interviews and evidence.
“We took a couple of people back to certain locations for interviews to see why the officer involved shooting occurred, what happened before, during and after that crash of the pursuit and what led to those shots being fired,” said Rocco Gagliardi, PSP public information officer.
