PITTSBURGH — Channel 11 is hearing exclusively from an Uber driver who was recently shot on the job.
“I thank them for being there. It’s about the best thing I can say. And I thank them,” Bill Donnelly told Channel 11.
That’s the message Bill Donnelly has for the two Pittsburgh police officers who helped him last week when he came to the department after his Uber passengers shot him.
Channel 11 was there for the aftermath of that incident.
“They said, ‘can we help you?’ And I said ‘yeah, I’ve been shot.’ I stood up out of the car, and they took me to one of the officer’s pick-up trucks and put a tourniquet on my left arm and leg,” Donnelly said.
He picked the riders up in Penn Hills and dropped them off in Lincoln-Lemington, where the shooting happened.
“I had my hand on my lap. It went in here and came out here, grazed against my thigh,” he said.
Now, he wants to warn other Uber drivers.
“Just be careful in general. You get a customer rating, what area it’s going to, you gotta be careful. Have a dashcam,” he said.
And - he is asking Uber to make safety changes.
“How many more drivers need to die or get shot or carjacked before there’s some extra step of security to identify who the passengers are, so we can identify getting them in,” Donnelly said.
An Uber spokesperson tells Channel 11, they are working with police on this. They added that they do have safety features where family can watch the driver’s routes on their phone, and ways to verify riders by having them upload an ID and photo.
On Monday, a Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson announced an arrest in connection with this shooting.
Jeremiah Schroeder, 18, is facing two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of recklessly endangering another person and firearms violations.
Schroeder is being held at the Allegheny County Jail.
