Pittsburgh residents react to retaliatory tariffs, higher gas & food prices

PITTSBURGH — That trip to the grocery store could soon cost you more.

“That’s something we just have to brace for and deal with,” said Gloria Townsend of the City of Pittsburgh.

With a 25% tariff on Canadian goods going into effect Tuesday, companies could pass the extra costs onto customers.

Canada’s prime minister is pushing back. Sunday, Justin Trudeau announced a retaliatory tariff of 25% on $155 billion in U.S. imports.

Though it could be weeks or months before people feel the pinch, Townsend says she’s going to start tightening her wallet now.

“I just feel that we’re all in trouble, but I think we can work it through but it’s going to be awhile and we’re going to suffer through a lot of it because we’re going to be responsible for paying those high prices now,” she said.

Gas prices could also go up. The U.S. imports some 4 million barrels per day of Canadian oil.

Rosalie Novak of Bloomfield isn’t too worried at this point.

“We’ve been suffering with these high prices for years now, four years,” Novak said.

President Donald Trump said the tariffs will boost domestic manufacturing and help stop illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

Novak said she understands what the administration is trying to do.

“I just don’t think he’s going to let it harm our economy or the country in any way,” she said.

Novak told Channel 11′s Antoinette DelBel she believes the country will be better in the long run.

“I have every confidence in President Trump,” said Novak.

The reaction is mixed.

“Right now, it doesn’t look really good for us and all we can do is try to survive,” Townsend said.

There’s also a 10% tariff on goods coming from China and a 25% tax on items from Mexico. Mexico’s president said she will announce new tariff details Monday.
