PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh non-profit is asking for help for the local refugees they work with amid government changes.
President Donald Trump issued a stop-work order that froze funding for refugee resettlement agencies like Hello Neighbor on Jan. 24.
Hello Neighbor, an organization that works to legally help refugees resettle in communities, said some of the families they work for are at risk of homelessness because of that order.
They were able to secure housing for some of the families, but they said they still need help ensuring that everyone has a place to sleep.
Hello Neighbor is trying to raise $5,000 for an Emergency Housing Fund. They want to reach that goal by Friday. The money will be used to purchase housing supplies for the refugees, Hello Neighbor said.
“The refugee resettlement system is a vital part of our community, and the decision to halt services puts thousands of families in jeopardy. At Hello Neighbor, we are committed to supporting refugees, but we need your help to continue this essential work during this challenging time,” the organization said.
