PITTSBURGH — Chicken wings are on the menu as sports bars across the country and in Pittsburgh gear up for the biggest night in football. Super Bowl 59 is less than 24 hours away and the food is always a big deal.
At Twelve Whiskey BBQ on the South Side, chicken wings are going in the fryer as they get ready to feed fans for the big game.
“I’m ready to see a good game,” said Brianna Bray of McKeesport.
Bray’s friend Mayah Perry of West Mifflin is excited for the Halftime Show.
“I’m ready for the halftime,” Perry said. “Kendrick Lamar and SZA are my favorite.”
The bar is hoping to score big with its new Game Day Platter which has pulled pork sliders, nachos, mozzarella sticks, dip and of course, wings.
Twelve Whiskey BBQ Owner Christie Miller said they ordered 1,500 wings for the Super Bowl. The popular menu item seems to go up in price every year.
“Wings are, I don’t even understand it,” she said. “It’s not just the chicken. It’s specifically wings.”
Miller, however, said she’s managed to keep menu prices reasonable and has taken a hit on her bottom line to avoid raising prices.
“The fact that we offer more quality food has allowed us to still thrive,” Miller said. “Making it all from scratch makes it actually cheaper.”
The team at Tom’s Watch Bar on the North Shore is gearing up for its second Super Bowl Watch Party since opening in Pittsburgh.
“We got the most TVs in the city, good food, great entertainment, best place to be,” said Matthew Wade, the bar manager at Tom’s Watch Bar.
The big game brings in big business. At Tom’s they’re expecting a full house.
“Everybody’s going to be ordering chicken wings, nachos; our prime rib dip is a big hit here,” Wade said.
The sports bar ordered a couple of thousand wings ahead of Sunday for to-go orders and in-house. Wade said they’ve made some minor adjustments, so they don’t pass the extra cost onto the customer.
“It’s going to be by weight, so you may not get as many but at the same time we don’t want to raise our price point,” he said.
