CRAFTON, Pa. — A woman died following an early morning fire in Crafton.
First responders were sent to a home on Elmwood Street before 6:30 a.m. Monday.
Our crew on scene saw flames shooting from the front door and smoke coming from the windows.
Crews discovered the body of a woman inside the home just after 8 a.m., according to Channel 11 sources. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified her as Christine B. Shutt, 71.
Crafton Fire Chief Mike Crown said they found a man on the front porch. He was taken to the hospital. He said another person initially reported missing was later found elsewhere.
Firefighters faced several challenges fighting the flames, according to Crown, including water freezing from the hydrants, slick conditions of Elmwood Street, which is paved with brick on a hill, and having to rotate firefighters in and out, with a warming tent and PRT bus on-site for shelter.
“They’ve already been through a lot of heat and they’re wet, now they’re freezing cold, we’ve gotta get them in rehab, so that’s why we have so many companies, to try to rotate the people through,” Crown said.
The Allegheny County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
