Pedestrian hit, killed by vehicle along McKnight Road

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Police confirmed that a collision along McKnight Road on Wednesday night was deadly. According to the Ross Township police, a car was traveling north in the passing lane of McKnight Road just before 11 p.m. The driver noticed a woman standing in the passing lane near the McKnight Hotel but was unable to avoid her, resulting in a collision.

“It’s crazy; no matter what time of day it is, it’s always chaotic,” said Kate Pfeifer when asked about McKnight Road.

On Thursday afternoon, Channel 11 News observed numerous pedestrians darting across this busy portion of McKnight Road. Some individuals stood waiting in the street before running into the middle of the road, hopping over the median, and continuing to the other side.

This dangerous situation proved deadly for one woman last night.

“I would not cross McKnight Road at any point; it’s a heavily traveled road that is not safe for crossing,” said driver Brian Moffitt.

According to Ross Township Police, the driver stayed at the scene.

The woman who died has been identified as Indipile Shea, 33, of Ross Township by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner.

“They [drivers] are rushing, moving in and out of lanes without using turn signals. It’s just constant, busy, rushed traffic,” said Pfeifer.

With four lanes of fast-moving traffic, several bus stops, and pedestrians crossing, this is not the first time a collision has occurred along McKnight Road.

In April, we reported on a multi-vehicle crash involving ten people, three of whom were sent to the hospital. In January, an SUV crashed into a building after a driver lost control and slid off the road. In October of last year, William McClendon was attempting to cross the road near the hotel when he was hit by a car and killed.

“It’s hard to go down McKnight Road every week without seeing a fender bender or a more severe accident,” Pfeifer said.

Drivers have suggested that adding more traffic lights and a walkway over the road could improve safety.

“I think the only way to avoid the chaos on McKnight Road is to go up and over the traffic,” one driver stated.

“That stretch of McKnight is rather dark for my liking. I think more street lighting along the northbound and southbound lanes could help,” Moffitt added.

The medical examiner has not yet released the name or age of the victim.
