Most Duquesne Light Company service restored after weekend wind knocks power out for thousands

Duquesne Light Company is reporting 136 customers are without power.

UPDATE 12/31/24 at 11:20 A.M.

Duquesne Light Company has updated when it expects for power to be completely resorted following Sunday’s severe weather.

On Monday afternoon, the utility company expected power to be restored to all customers by 10 p.m. on Jan. 1. That estimate has now been moved to 10 p.m. on Dec. 31.

As of around 10:30 a.m., Duquesne Light Company reported just over 500 outages.

West Penn Power is reporting around 1,200 customers without power in the region.

Duquesne Light Company is reporting 2,506 customers without power.

Duquesne Light Company is reporting 3,499 customers without power.

Duquesne Light Company has made significant progress in restoring service after Sunday’s high winds, but it could be two more days for every outage to be restored.

At one point, there were more than 50,000 customers without power. As of 5 p.m., just under 7,000 people remained without the utility.

DLC now estimates that all services will be restored by Jan. 1, with many customers expected to be restored sooner. The utility company says there were over 400 instances of either vegetation on wires, broken utility poles or wires down because of the wind gusts during storms on Sunday evening.

DLC says crews are working around the clock to restore power.

UPDATE 12/30/24 at 3 P.M.

As of 2:45 p.m., around 11,000 Duquesne Light customers remained without power.

Around 6,000 West Penn Power customers remained without power.

Duquesne Light is calling in help in the ongoing effort to restore power following high winds.

DLC says it has requested 50 mutual assistance contractors to aid with storm restoration.

The power company says Sunday’s wind gusts have led to at least 273 instances of trees or limbs on wires, 160 broken utility poles and 93 wires down.

As of 12:30 p.m., 23,000 DLC customers remain without power. Just under 6,000 West Penn Power customers are still without power in the region.

As of 11 a.m. on Monday morning, nearly 40,000 remained without power in Western Pennsylvania.

Duquesne Light Company reports around 33,000 customers without power.

There are over 7,000 West Penn Power Company customers without power in our region.

UPDATE 12/29/24 at 10:45 P.M.

Power outages are beginning to be restored but the total number still exceeds 50,000.

33,753 total Duquesne Light customers are still without power.

They said they will be focusing on emergency needs first and are working to establish and estimated time of restoration for all of their customers.

Duquesne Light Company is asking their customers to do the following things to stay safe:

  • Call 9-1-1 for any emergency medical issues that could be impacted by an outage.
  • Avoid downed power lines and give ample space to lineworkers.
  • Avoid walking under or around trees that have a visible trunk or dangling limbs.
  • Check emergency supply kits to ensure that essential items (batteries, battery-powered radio, first-aid kit, medication, flashlights, water, blankets, etc.) are within reach.
  • Charge all-important electronic devices such as cell phones.
  • Check medications that require refrigeration and may be affected by a prolonged outage.

DLC Customers are also encouraged to report outages so that crews are aware that repairs need to be made in that area.

Over 50,000 people are without power as strong winds hit Western Pennsylvania.

Duquesne Light Company is reporting 56,367 customers without power, as of 9:13 p.m.

Allegheny County has most of those power outages with 53,626 customers without service.

Beaver County has 5,163 reported power outages.
