Outburst captured during Allegheny County Jail Oversight Board meeting; what led up to it

PITTSBURGH — The president judge of Allegheny County caught screaming at two board members during a meeting discussing issues with the jail.

“I was deeply offended by her actions, and I think we deserve an apology,” said Muhammad Ali Nasir, better known as Man-E.

He wants an apology from President Judge Susan Evashavik for an outburst last night at the Jail Oversight Board meeting.

The President Judge stood up, pointed her finger at Man-E and Councilperson Bethany Hallam, and threatened to have them removed from the meeting if they kept interrupting the man who was speaking.

The outburst comes after a discussion about a series of emails that were sent to the board by a white man, who claims he was called the n-word.

In three separate emails, the man spells out the slur, despite Man-E asking him not to.

“I would have preferred if he would have said either a ‘racial slur’ or ‘n-word.’ He spelled out the full word with a hard R, and I was deeply offended by that,” Man-E told Channel 11.

Bethany Hallam also spoke up and raised her voice when speaking about the context in which the word was used.

Judge Evashavik wanted to give the man extra time to explain himself in the meeting and disagreed with Hallam’s characterization of the word.

The two continued to spar until the Judge stood up, and began yelling at Hallam and Man-E, and threatened to kick them out of the meeting.

“I was really shocked. I was really surprised. She threatened to have us removed, while she was simultaneously defending this man’s use of the n-word; she was silencing us,” Man-E added.

Channel 11 reached out to Judge Evashavik’s office and court administration. We were told she did not have a comment.
