CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. — An apparent landslide killed a bicyclist and injured another Saturday along the Great Allegheny Passage, according to the coroner.
Fayette County Coroner Bob Baker identified the deceased victim as a 79-year-old woman. Officials are working to notify her next of kin.
The other bicyclist was taken to the hospital after the accident, Baker said, though he didn’t specify their condition.
Pennsylvania State Police troopers were sent to mile marker 87.6 on the Great Allegheny Passage for reports of two people trapped under a rock, a spokesperson tells Channel 11.
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has taken over the investigation.
Officials with Ohiopyle State Park said in a social media post that a rockslide happened within the park, and that the injured bicyclist was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.
In a social media post, Great Allegheny Passage officials said the landslide has closed the trail between Ohiopyle and Connellsville.
Trail users are told to avoid that section. Shuttles can be arranged using this link.
Connellsville Mayor Greg Lincoln posted this statement on social media:
“As many of you know, today a terrible accident occurred on the bike trail right outside the city. A couple, enjoying a beautiful ride on the trail, were caught in a landslide. Unfortunately, a life was lost and someone else was significantly injured. I won’t release any more information on an ongoing incident. However, the couple and their family are in the thoughts and prayers of my family and everyone in Connellsville. I would like to thank the first responders and everyone who responded to this accident to help. I ask everyone to please keep them in your thoughts and prayers too.”
