For decades, local leaders said East Hills Drive has been in poor condition. The road connects Penn Hills to the East Hills community.
“This is one interaction that has been left in unrepair for a significant amount of time,” said State Rep. Joe McAndrew.
During a press conference Tuesday, McAndrew said the road used to be maintained by Sears before the store closed. After that, the road was never claimed by the city or municipality. For years, the road got worse due to a lack of funding and ownership.
McAndrew and other city leaders, including Mayor Ed Gainey, announced they got a $250,000 state grant to pave the road.
“For not being maintained for 15 years, we will be paving this within a year and not only that, since there’s been a lot of dumping that been happening in this corridor, we will be putting up new fencing, new lighting and making sure no dumping can occur,” McAndrew said.
The road is owned by Tamion Enterprises, the nonprofit branch of Petra Ministries. McAndrew said this will help bring the communities together.
“The East Hills community has hundreds of people living in it and although they don’t live in Penn Hills, they connect to our community, shop at our grocery store, go to our gas station,” said McAndrew.
McAndrew said the state funds should cover all the costs for this project.
