JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — A suspect has been charged in connection with an officer-involved shooting in Johnstown.
State police say officers were called just before 4 p.m. to a business with skill game machines inside for reports of a theft in progress.
Officers arrived to find a man trying to access a skill game machine. Police say he didn’t comply with orders and tried to flee, causing an officer to use his Taser to try and get him to comply.
The Taser was unsuccessful at getting the man to comply, and he fled into a vacant lot outside the building.
As officers were chasing him, the man pulled out a handgun. An officer then shot the man, who was taken into custody.
No officers were injured, and a loaded Ruger 9mm handgun was recovered, police say.
Christopher John Lehman, 32, of Johnstown, is facing multiple charges in connection with the incident.
Police say Lehman doesn’t have a valid license to carry a concealed firearm, and he is prohibited from having one due to a previous criminal conviction.
Lehman allegedly damaged the skill game machine by trying to gain access to it using a grinder and screwdriver. The machine had $8,223 inside.
Police say video surveillance footage from multiple sources helped get the charges against Lehman.
Cambria County District Attorney Greg Neugebauer told NBC News affiliate WJAC that Lehman was taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive.
Neugebauer says the officer involved will be put on paid administrative leave, in accordance with standard protocol.
