Police, fire and EMS crews were called to the area of Highland Avenue and Cornell Avenue around 6:13 a.m. for a two-vehicle crash.
When crews arrived, they found the driver of one of the vehicles, a woman, dead at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle, a man, was not injured.
On Thursday afternoon, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman who was killed as Addalena Maiette, 19, of West View.
The North Hills School District released the following statement on Maiette’s death:
“The North Hills School District is deeply saddened to learn of this morning’s tragic passing of 2025 North Hills High School graduate Addie Maiette. Addie was a valued member of the North Hills girls soccer team and also studied carpentry at A.W. Beattie Career Center.
We extend our sincere condolences to Addie’s family, friends, and everyone whose lives she touched.
Counseling services are available at the high school and will remain accessible for as long as they are needed to support students, staff, and families during this unimaginable time.
This heartbreaking loss reminds us how quickly life can change. May we find strength in one another and comfort in the love of family, friends, and our community.”
Allegheny County detectives said that preliminary information shows that three vehicles were stopped in the left-hand lane on Highland Avenue. Police said the third vehicle in line then attempted to pass the two vehicles by traveling into the opposite lane.
As that vehicle was passing, police said the first vehicle in line tried to make a left turn onto Cornell, and the two vehicles collided.
Detectives said that due to the significant damage done to both vehicles, they weren’t immediately able to determine which vehicle was attempting to pass and which vehicle was trying to turn left.
By Sept. 29, detectives determined Maiette was driving in the opposite lane of travel, trying to pass the other vehicles, when she hit the other driver, who was turning left onto Cornell Avenue.
Nearly 1,000 people were without power in the area after the crash, according to Duquesne Light’s website. Duquesne Light crews and the company said it expects to restore service by the afternoon.
The outage also forced the Northgate School District to close its middle and high schools for the day.
While investigators have not yet ruled speed as a factor in this specific accident, police told Channel 11 that it is a known issue on Highland Avenue.
“We do try to do speed details there to slow people down,” said Lt. Matt Holland of the Qest View Borough Police Department. “Absolutely, use caution when pulling out onto that road.”
The crash remains under investigation. Allegheny County Police said they’ll release additional details when they’re available.
