MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A Moon Township pizza place was ordered to close after health inspectors found an active sewage backup in the restaurant’s basement.
Allegheny County health inspectors shut down Cardello Pizza on Monday. A report states that during the inspection, 13 violations were found — including an emergency violation for waste water disposal.
The report states that inspectors found an active sewage backup in the basement. Wastewater was backing up at three separate basement floor drains, which inspectors say is evidence of a 100% blockage. Some of the backup is near a clean dish drying rack, in front of a freezer, by the backdoor and in the vicinity of a shelf full of dry goods. There Cardello’s operator told inspectors that the backup started on Sunday.
Inspectors recommended that Cardellos restrict access to the basement and fully clean and disinfect areas affected by the sewage, then request a reinspection when the backup is fixed.
The report also notes lower-level violations. Those violations include no date marking system in place for prepared produce, excessive grease buildup in several places, no easily accessible paper towels by a handwashing sink, store food at improper temperatures and a buildup of dust on the ventilation system. Several of these violations were considered repeats.
