Mike McCarthy reveals reason for Elandon Roberts’ release

During his media availability on Tuesday, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy revealed why the team parted ways with veteran linebacker Elandon Roberts.

“Number 1, outstanding player. He came here late. He definitely lived up to his reputation. I enjoyed him while he was here. Wish him the best of luck. You know, there’s a lot of things that go into those final decisions. Special teams is usually a big part of once you get past who you see the first 11 or 12 going out on the field, offense and defense,” McCarthy said. “And I’ve talked extensively during the initial process about different combinations of players. Different things we’re doing schematically that will get into once we play our first game.”

Steelers general manager Omar Khan revealed on Monday they “aren’t closing the door” on a return for Roberts, but that doesn’t not appear to be happening at this time.

“Not closing the door on that by any means,” Khan said. “I have a lot of respect for E-Rob. We have some history with him and he’s done a good job. Love the player and love the person. Certainly not closing the door.”

Roberts, who is a downhill run-stopper, was a surprise release by the Steelers.
