Mayor Ed Gainey announces nomination for next Pittsburgh Police chief

Mayor Ed Gainey

PITTSBURGH — Mayor Ed Gainey on Friday nominated Acting Chief Christopher Ragland as the next Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Chief.

A release from Gainey’s office said the decision follows a “careful and thorough process,” including talking with officers in all six zones across the city about what improvements are needed.

“Acting Chief Ragland has demonstrated the ability to lead the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police with a commitment to moving the Bureau in the right direction,” said Mayor Gainey. “He believes in unbiased policing, grounding his work in respect for each person that he encounters. He has a deep understanding of all Bureau needs— from operations to administration— and a strong commitment to human and civil rights. With this foundation, he’s focused on building on our progress to enhance communication, accountability, and service to the people of Pittsburgh.”

Ragland has been with the bureau for more than 30 years and has been serving as acting police chief since former Chief Larry Scirotto retired in November.

Ragland’s nomination now goes to City Council for an interview and confirmation vote.
