Bystander helps man shot in abdomen in Pittsburgh’s Brookline neighborhood while waiting for medics

PITTSBURGH — A man was taken to the hospital after a broad daylight shooting in Pittsburgh, just 30 minutes after school let out.

Allegheny County 911 dispatchers tell Channel 11 that police, fire and EMS were called to the 800 block of Brookline Boulevard around 4:20 p.m. Monday.

Police say a man was shot twice and they’re now looking for two suspects under the age of 18.

“They arrived on scene and there was an off-duty medic and a firefighter working on the victim who is believed to be shot in the chest area and he was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition,” Cara Cruz said.

Police originally believed the man was shot in the chest and arm, but later said he was shot in the abdomen.

Bystander Cesar Rivera, who was working at the time of the shooting, helped apply pressure to the man’s wounds while they waited for an ambulance.

“The victim did grab onto me, onto my right shoulder, and I just let him hold on. He was saying and thinking that he was losing his life, but I just let him take comfort and knowing that my presence was there for him,” Rivera told Channel 11.

A car was also damaged by gunfire right outside Suns of Intanity.

“My son was dropping off my other employee and was right there and I was actually on the phone with him and I could hear it through his window,” Nicole Barrett said.

“We’re trying to prevent all this and that’s the hard part because I wanted to start this before something happens and now something did,” said Tom Swartz of Steel City Craft Emporium.

Swartz recently started the Brookline Boulevard Bouncers watch group. As of a few weeks ago, there’s an officer dedicated to patroling the street.

“I know that the officer told me that it would be more helpful if he had another partner with him,” Swartz said.
