PENN HILLS, Pa. — An argument between neighbors and family members in a Penn Hills neighborhood led to a man getting stabbed in the stomach with a corkscrew and another man behind bars.
Court documents claim Jonathan Hairston stabbed a man Monday afternoon outside of his house on Funston Avenue. Penn Hills police said Hairston was upset because he believed the man attempted to kick in his front door following a disagreement between him and the victim’s parents, who live across the street.
Hairston reportedly told police that the man lifted his shirt and showed a gun, and as he was approached, Hairston stabbed him with the corkscrew.
Penn Hills neighbors couldn’t believe that this argument, which started just up the street, escalated so quickly.
“We never have any crimes going on, on this street,” Henry Finney said. “It’s crazy.”
The man who was stabbed attempted to drive himself to the hospital, according to police. He ended up having to stop on Runnette Street and was found lying in the road. Witnesses tried to help the victim until medics arrived. He was taken to UPMC Presby and is expected to survive.
Hairston was arrested by police shortly after the stabbing.
“I’m glad they were on it and everything is taken care of,” Finney said. “I hope they patrol around here more often from crazy activities and stuff like that because these kids, they catch a bus right at the top of the hill at the corner.”
Investigators said after Hairston was taken into custody, he became agitated while in a jail cell at the police station. He allegedly started shaking cell doors, then rammed the cell doors with his head, splitting it open. He was taken to the hospital, and then to jail.
