A local lawmaker is pushing for safer railroads.
Next week marks two years since the catastrophic Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. It happened just over the border from Beaver County.
Congressman Chris Deluzio is detailing new rail safety legislation to try to protect communities from similar struggles.
He called on President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance to put their weight behind the bills.
He said it would tighten requirements for wheel bearings, which caused the East Palestine train derailment, and also hazardous material being transported on trains. He wants higher fines for when railroads break the law.
“When they break the rules, it can’t just be a slap on the wrist for powerful railroads. They’ve got to respect us in a real way,” Deluzio said.
Deluzio sits on the House Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials. He is hoping for bipartisan support.
