LATROBE, Pa. — The daily Spirit Airlines flight out of Latrobe arrived just before 2 p.m. Monday to take travelers down to Orlando, Florida. For some, it’s vacation. For others, it’s a trip back home. For everyone boarding the plane, it’s an escape from this week’s brutal cold.
“It’s too cold, it’s too wet, it’s too cold, it snows too much, I’m ready to go home,” laughed Donna Stewart.
Stewart was born in Johnstown, but hasn’t lived in the area for more than 40 years. She was back in town the last two weeks visiting her mom.
“I was so worried they were going to cancel this flight today, I was like, ‘oh, please please, please, please, I don’t want to be stuck here for a month!” Stewart said.
While she’s going back home to warm weather, others are just escaping temporarily.
“We’re going to be down there for the week, we’re going down for the PGA Golf Show,” said John Sarver.
Sarver and Melissa Mountain of Somerset said they’ve had enough of the snow and cold. They said they got about five inches of snow Sunday which they say is just another day in what has been an unrelenting winter in the mountain ridges.
“We hate it,” Mountain said.
This trip to Florida just happened to come at a good time, getting out before the temperatures and wind chills are both below zero.
As for any advice for us sticking around?
“It’s not too late to book your flight, that’s my advice!” Sarver said.
