5 people, including 2 students, taken to hospital after school bus crash in Plum

PLUM, Pa. — The Plum Police Department said five vehicles, including a school bus full of kids, were involved in a crash in Plum Tuesday afternoon.

Police said five people, including the two children, were taken to nearby hospitals.

The crash happened on Golden Mile Highway at N Duane Drive. Allegheny County dispatchers said it happened at 3:10 p.m.

The Plum Borough School District said the bus was involved in the crash during its routine afternoon transportation.

The school bus had 27 students on board from Holiday Park Intermediate and Plum Middle School. Two of them were taken to the hospital by their parents for further evaluation, the school district said.

One car rolled over and another crashed into the hillside, Channel 11 learned.

The school district said a replacement vehicle was immediately dispatched to complete the route and ensure all students are transported home safely.

“We are immensely grateful that all of our students and the driver are safe and appreciate the cooperation and patience of our students and families this afternoon,” the district said in a statement.

Savino DiLonardo was working on an order at Grand Slam Pizza along Golden Mile Highway when he said he looked out the window to see several police and EMS crews. He then noticed two cars off the road. One of them was on its side.

“I saw one car flipped over like right across the street,” DiLonardo said. “Originally, I only saw the one car, and when I took a step outside, there was another car flipped over. I saw pieces of like a school bus laying around. [It] took me by surprise. There were a lot of pieces of cars all over the road. Looked very hectic until first responders came in.”

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police do not believe weather played a role.

“I just was hoping everyone was okay, honestly,” DiLonardo said. “I mean, there were people standing around. Everyone looked fine.”
