Investigation underway after several Jewish organizations in Pittsburgh receive threatening letters

PITTSBURGH — Jewish organizations in Pittsburgh have received threatening letters in the mail, the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh confirmed to Channel 11 on Tuesday.

Director of Security for the Federation, Shawn Brokos, says three organizations received the letters, including Tree of Life.

“While deeply disturbing, we want to assure our community that safety and security remain our top priority,” the spokesperson said.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh is in contact with the FBI and local law enforcement, who are actively investigating the threats.

The announcement comes a day after the Tree of Life unveiled a final design for the building that will house a museum dedicated to fighting antisemitism.

Brokos does not believe that has anything to do with the timing of the letters.

“I truly think it’s happenstance. I think this particular individual had looked at our Jewish organizations and started writing letters. I don’t think the timing is intentional,” she said.

Officials do believe the letters are all from the same person and that the writer is from out of town.

The federation’s security team is also monitoring the situation to ensure that all Jewish institutions are protected.
