PITTSBURGH — The Heinz History Center will host special programs for Black History Month.
A series of programs will be hosted throughout February. The museum said each program will help visitors better interpret African American History.
The programs announced on Thursday are:
- From Slavery to Freedom Film Series: “The Hero”
- Virtual Program on Feb. 12 from 5:30-8 p.m.
- “The Hero” tells a story about how Angolan people are working to reconstruct their lives after forty years of an uninterrupted war. It will be part of the museum’s ongoing film series that tells the story of Africans in America, and other stories of African history.

- 11th Annual Black History Month Lecture: David J. Dennis, Jr.
- Event at the Heinz History Center on Feb. 20 from 6-7:30 p.m.
- Award-winning journalist and author David J. Dennis Jr. will tell the story of his father who organized Freedom Rides, lunch counter sit-ins and voter registration drives in the Jim Crow South.
Guests are also encouraged to visit the museum’s long-term Black Heritage in Western Pennsylvania exhibits. One such exhibit, From Slavery to Freedom, shows 250 years of history in the local area.
There is also the Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation exhibit which honors Black trailblazers in the city who helped make historic breakthroughs in the area.
