Gunshots by Perry Traditional Academy put school on lockdown; students to learn remotely Wednesday

PITTSBURGH — Shots fired outside of Perry Traditional Academy sent the school on lockdown Tuesday morning.

Pittsburgh police responded to the area for an 11-round shot spotter in the area of the school on Perrysville Avenue shortly after students arrived.

The school went into lockdown as a precaution. And, out of an abundance of caution, students will learn remotely on Wednesday.

A Pittsburgh Public School District spokesperson says students will follow their regular class schedules to “maintain continuity of instruction.” The remote learning day will also let school administration assess the needs of students and staff.

Public safety officials said it was not at the school but nearby. Our crews on the scene could see police tape in front of the school and over a half-dozen evidence marks on the sidewalk. Bullets damaged two windows and brickwork.

According to preliminary information, police say a boy was the target of the shots fired. No injuries were reported. Pittsburgh Police and Pittsburgh Public School Police are investigating and combing through surveillance footage trying to identify the shooter.

A mom we spoke who was only a block away when the shots rang out said she was almost in tears because she was scared for her kids.

“It was literally right there on the corner so it scared the life out of me there were kids all over the place out there,” Gina Martinac said.

Martinac said a crossing guard and another parent were helping to protect students.

“They were the real heroes because there were tons and tons of little kids out there,” she said. “I heard the shots go off and saw the crossing guard grab the kids and bring them over to the firehouse in between the house and building just to keep them safe.”

The school district is providing support resources to students and staff. Parents have been notified of the resources available for their children.
