4 people displaced after fire in West Homestead building

WEST HOMESTEAD, Pa. — Firefighters worked to extinguish flames in West Homestead on Tuesday afternoon.

Allegheny County 911 officials tell Channel 11 that the fire activity was in the 200 block of W 8th Avenue.

Video from a passerby shared with Channel 11 shows flames coming from the roof of a building.

Fire officials said the fire damaged three buildings being used mainly as apartments, and the four people who lived there cannot go back inside.

“I’m sad for the people who live there,” said West Homestead Fire Chief John Dindak. “Obviously, they’ve probably lost everything. It’s pretty sad for them.”

No one was hurt in the fire, despite the dangerous conditions firefighters were battling. But, Dindak said the wind and cold were major factors in putting out the blaze.

“The wind, the cold, the ice, same as everybody else struggling with this time of year. It’s winter right you gotta deal with it,” Dindak said.

Dindak says if this fire happened at night, it would have been much more dangerous.

“We’re lucky it was a daytime call which is odd to have this kind of fire in the daytime. If this was nighttime it would be a totally different story,” he said.

We spoke with a witness who was across the street when the fire broke out.

“Just crazy because you could see the flames from out here on the street. You could see the flames in the back and it was a lot of smoke,” Bill Geyer said.

Because of the fire, Route 837 in West Homestead was closed between the Homestead Grays Bridge and West 7th Avenue.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
