Fire prompts evacuations at apartment building in Tarentum

TARENTUM, Pa. — There was a large emergency response and some residents were evacuated when a fire broke out at an apartment building in Tarentum Thursday morning.

The three-alarm fire at Golden Towers, which now appears to be under control, started just before 4 a.m. along Allegheny Street.

Eureka Fire Rescue EMS Chief Brad James told Channel 11 that a couch and some other items caught fire in a third-floor apartment.

James said the fire went to three alarms for three reasons: The smoke was moving through the building quickly; the fire took place in a high-rise building; and the heat was high and crews were very busy because of the storm.

The fire prompted a partial evacuation along with a shelter-in-place in the other units.

One resident told Channel 11 that he was burning incense and a fan knocked it over, causing the couch to catch fire and spread. The fire chief said the official cause of the fire is unknown and is still under investigation.

No one was injured in the fire.
