UNIONTOWN, Pa. — Voters in Fayette County were supposed to sign in on electronic polling pads today, but the Pennsylvania Department of State said they mistakenly uploaded the 2024 voting data instead of 2025’s.
“When I signed in to the poll pad, they flipped it over and it said that I had already sent in my mail-in ballot, which was a shock to me because I did not vote by mail this year,” Commissioner and Chairman of the Election Board Scott Dunn said.
Commissioner Dunn was one of the first people to vote in Fayette County on Tuesday morning. When he realized his voting status was incorrect, he went to the Pennsylvania Department of State for answers.
“They finally confirmed that they transferred a file that we downloaded into the poll pad, and the transferred file was not the correct file. It was actually the 2024 election files,” Dunn said.
All 77 precincts in Fayette County were then notified to stop using the polling pads and use the back up paper poll books.
“In our conversations with the state, we did confirm that they had sent us the correct file for the backup,” Dunn said.
All polling locations were notified by 10 a.m., but some voters were turned away due to their voting status with the polling pads, or they had to fill out a provisional ballot.
“If you voted via provisional ballot because of this, your vote is going to count. If you didn’t vote, please come back,” Dunn said. “This problem has been corrected. And if you voted with no issues and you cast your ballot…then you’re fine! You don’t need to do anything else.”
Those who work at the Fayette County Bureau of Elections said they don’t know how many voters this issue impacted.
