WEST VIEW, Pa. — A father is in the Allegheny County Jail after police say he passed out behind the wheel of his car with his baby in the backseat. West View Police say when they tried to wake him up, he took off at a high speed and crashed.
West View Police say David Schultz was passed out behind the wheel on Monday morning near Center Avenue and Perrysville Avenue.
Officers say they were banging on the window and saw a baby in the backseat. They say Schultz’s car started rolling into the intersection. Police say when Schultz woke up, he took off, before crashing into a parked SUV near Lakewood and Chalfonte Avenues.
Police say a 1-year-old baby boy was in the car, not buckled into his car seat. The baby was seen by Ross West View EMS and fortunately, he is okay.
Court documents say after the crash, Schultz grabbed the baby and took off toward an alley, before hiding in a nearby backyard.
Police say the father shouldn’t have been behind the wheel in the first place because his license was suspended because of a prior DUI.
We asked Schultz questions as he was walked out of the West View Police Department and put into the back of a squad car, headed to jail. He cursed quite a bit and said he didn’t know his license was suspended. He claimed the paperwork was never mailed to him and that they’re lying. He also added something about his hoodie being missing.
We asked why he was driving under the influence with his baby in the car. He started to say he was trying to go somewhere, but he didn’t finish the sentence.
Police say the baby is now with his mom.
Schultz is facing felony endangering the welfare of a child, felony eluding and DUI with a suspended license charges to name a few.
