ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — Loved ones continue to hold onto hope that charges will be filed in the case of Kaylene Oehling, whose remains were found in March of 2023.
Last week marked five years since the Etna woman, then 20, was first reported missing.
“As a family, we will never give up,” said Paul Young, the victim’s uncle. “We will never stop.”
For years, loved ones hoped to find the young woman alive. Channel 11 learned in 2021 that investigators considered her disappearance suspicious and stated that they indeed had suspects.
Years later, her remains were discovered by hunters within a wooded area off of Washington Boulevard in Pittsburgh’s Lincoln Lemington Belmar neighborhood.
“It’s really sad that anybody would end up in a place like this,” Young said on Monday, gesturing to the hillside. “She had a full family. A lot of friends. People miss her.”
The Medical Examiner, at the time, listed the cause and manner of death as “undetermined.” As of Monday, that status remained.
A spokesperson for County Police sent Channel 11 the following statement last week: “we have presented our findings in this case to the District Attorney’s office for review. It remains an open and active investigation.”
At the time this article was published, representatives for the DA’s Office had not responded to our requests for comment.
“Every year, I feel like it gets a little harder because there has not been justice in the case so far,” Young said. “Holidays, birthdays, they kind of lack the luster that they once had. I know that there’s been some collaboration with different departments - FBI, county detectives - putting some pieces of the puzzle together, so I’m fairly confident that at some point we will get some better answers.”
