MILLVALE, Pa. — The entrance to the Millvale Riverfront is closed indefinitely after chunks of concrete came crumbling down from the roof of the overpass, onto the road below.
Road closed signs and heavy machinery were brought in so cars and people aren’t able to enter the Riverfront area through one side of the overpass. The exit is still open to traffic and people, so it’s currently being used as a one-way entrance/exit.
Sandy Onofray and Laura Shymansky run along the Riverfront frequently and often pass under the railroad bridge on foot and in their cars.
“I’m very happy it didn’t fall down while we were running underneath,” Onofray said.
Between the rust and the rebar, we could see pieces of the bridge dangling from the roof.
“Hopefully they will go back and speak to their engineers, get the ball rolling,” Onofray added.
Millvale Police initially said the structure was owned by Norfolk Southern but Channel 11 has learned it is not Norfolk Southern’s bridge. Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) records show it’s actually owned by Allegheny Valley Railroad.
As the weather gets warmer and more people are coming down to the Riverfront, Millvale Police want to warn people to be cautious when they come in and out of the area using the exit.
Sandy Onofray and Laura Shymansky tell Channel 11 that with all the running they do along the Riverfront, this railroad bridge is one of many they say makes them feel a bit uneasy.
“Unfortunately, we’ve seen them,” Onofray added. “We run many miles, there are times we look up and think ‘Oh boy.’”
We reached out to the vice president for Allegheny Valley Railroad, but so far, we have not heard back.
Millvale’s Borough manager says it’s too soon to know any timeline for repairs.
