Dozens stranded at Greyhound station downtown due to severe winter weather

PITTSBURGH — Dozens of bus riders are stranded at the Greyhound station after their trips were cancelled on Sunday and Monday. One rider says he counted close to 100 people stuck with nowhere to go. Many of those stranded riders cannot afford hotel rooms and are sleeping on the floor of the downtown station.

“There are a lot of people in here,” Tracey Heimberger tells Channel 11. “There are kids, families, people in wheelchairs. What do you do?”

Tracey Heimberger was in tears talking to us and had to end the interview, saying the stress was too much. She is one of dozens stuck at the Greyhound station in downtown Pittsburgh for days.

“It has really been a nightmare,” Tracey Heimberger told Channel 11 News. “Nobody here is trying to help with anything. Some of these hotels are $400 a night. What can you do? I’m sleeping on these hard floors.”

James Hoskins uses a wheelchair. He says he got to the downtown Pittsburgh station on Thursday. He says he got messages day after day saying his trip was cancelled.

“Now I’m here scheduled ‘til Wednesday,” Hoskins said. “Yeah, almost a whole week.”

Hoskins says his family has been sending him money so he can roll in his chair to a convenience store to get food and supplies.

“Crowded, morale is pretty down,” Hoskins described the environment at the downtown station. “They did pass out food this morning, so I’ll give them that.”

We reached out to Greyhound and a spokesperson said their team began notifying passengers with trips affected by severe winter weather with up to 24 hours’ notice, adding, “The ongoing severe winter weather has caused changes, cancellations, and delays to bus schedules across the United States and Canada. Regrettably, some passengers were impacted mid-journey.  Our customer service team is working directly with the affected customers to resume service as soon as the weather conditions permit.”

Right now, buses in 17 states, Washington D.C. and Canada are affected by this storm.

Greyhound says those buses will not be able to roll out until they can assure all customers will be safe.
